As pilot John Sullivan (Robert Stack) begins to realize that the flight from Hawaii to California is in mechanical trouble, his co-pilot Dan Roman (John Wayne) must take the helm as the pilot reports to the passengers their grim fate. One by one, the passengers receive the news that the plane may have to make a crash landing in the Pacific ocean. As the reality of possible death occurs to each one, they express their unique reaction. Some are stoic, others become hysterical. Still others must try to resolve conflict with those they love. And others may take the opportunity to assert themselves as they have never had the courage before. But, together, along with the bravery of the unassuming co-pilot Roman, the crew and passengers are challenged to take up the fight of their lives to survive.
