When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor during World War Two, Capt. Rockwell Torrey (John Wayne) was able to survive with all his men even though he lost his ship by taking it out of the harbor. Under scrutiny, he survives his demotion to a desk job with the help of his love interest Lieutenant Maggie Hayes (Patricia Neal). Having proved himself to be a good leader again, Admiral Nimitz (Henry Fonda) puts him in charge of Operation Apple Pie, a retaliation effort for American forces to take back the Solomon Islands and regain control of the Pacific. To help him in this mission is Paul Eddington (Kirk Douglas) who has not recovered from the attack on Pearl Harbor or the loss of his unfaithful wife as well as Torrey. So, trying to help his buddy and face the enemy struggling to keep their iron-clad hold on the Pacific becomes both a personal as well as military struggle.
