Esther Hoffman (Barbra Streisand) is just breaking into the music business when she meets John Norman Howard (Kris Kristofferson), a rock star whose career is waning. John Norman has become cynical about life after spending many years on concert tours and dealing with shady show biz personnel. He sees his career going down the tubes, but he’s so out of control and so strung out on booze and drugs that he doesn’t really care. Esther is a breath of fresh air in his jaded life. She’s fresh, innocent, and enthusiastic which he hasn’t been in a long, long time. He ignores his own career and works to help her get her start. They fall in love, marry, and Esther’s career really takes off. John Norman, however, continues to decline with his fading career, and his life spirals down out of control. Esther stands by her man as he tumbles into the world of alcoholic stupors and drugged hallucinations. She is still reeling from her own astronomical rise, but she’s always there to offer him her support and encouragement. Finally, though, it becomes evident that it would take more strength than even the loving Esther has to save him from himself.
